The great British actor Ian McKellen is making a rare appearance in New York theater—his first in more than a decade.
But the word “appearance” is somewhat deceptive: Mr. McKellen himself is not actually performing on a New York stage, but a remarkably lifelike hologram of the actor shimmers before us in “An Ark,” an innovative technological twist on traditional theater at the Shed.
The dialogue is delivered by digitally rendered, three-dimensional-looking images of Mr. McKellen and three other actors, Golda Rosheuvel, Arinzé Kene and Rosie Sheehy.
And Mr. McKellen is mildly avuncular, radiating a stealthy, benevolent attitude.
