What does chopped mean?
Chopped is slang for “unattractive” or “uncool.” It’s an insult popularly used by teens today to put others down for their looks or social status.
A recent variation of chopped is choppelganger. A portmanteau of chopped and doppelganger, it refers to the less attractive lookalike of someone familiar (such as a celebrity). Another variation is optionally chopped; in other words, looking “unattractive” by choice. On social media, users share before-and-after videos that begin with them in simple clothes, no makeup, and hair undone before transitioning to a full glow-up.
Where does chopped come from?
Chopped caught on with younger generations after a meme known as “Chopped Chin” went viral in late 2024. The meme comes from a video of a WNBA player and her teen son dancing courtside during a basketball game. The original reshared video features motivational quotes and is set to the song “Bring Me Back” by artist Miles Away. But, as the post received more and more views, some users started to comment that the son’s chin was “chopped,” sparking a meme that quickly spread to TikTok. Because the meme is based on a real person, it has been criticized for being rude and insensitive.
Despite the term’s recent attention on social media, chopped is believed to have originated years earlier in African American Vernacular English (AAVE).

Who uses chopped?
Members of Gen Z and Gen Alpha use the term in real life, and in posts on TikTok, X, and Instagram. However, chopped is thought to have circulated within Black communities long before younger generations started using it on social media.
